Making Shoes

You start with a flat surface, a foot (your largest) a piece of paper (cardstock like an old file folder works well), a pen or pencil, a cloth tape measure, and a friend.

Stand bare or stocking footed on the paper as you normally would stand. Have your friend trace around the outside of your foot with the pen or pencil upright, perpendicular to the ground. (See below)

Then, have them mark 3 points on this tracing:
  • The widest point:
Mark the ball of the foot on the instep and another mark on the widest part of the outside of the foot. This is usually on the ball joint of the smallest toe, but not always.
  • The start of the arch:
Look at the instep an make a mark where the arch of the foot starts. Make another mark on the outside of the foot roughly straight across from this mark.
  • The end of the arch:
Look at the instep an make a mark where the arch of the foot stops. Make another mark on the outside of the foot roughly straight across from this mark.(See below)

With your foot still on the cardtock, use a cloth tape measure to measure across your foot at each of these marks. Put these measurements next to their lines.
